Professional Summary of Yvette M. Alexander
The Honorable Yvette M. Alexander served as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia from May 2007 to January 2017. In 2015-2016, she served as Chair of the Committee on Health and Human Services, which has oversight of a $4.5 Billion budget that includes the following agencies; Department of Health, Department of Health Care Finance, Department of Behavioral Health, District of Columbia Health Benefit Exchange Authority, The Not For Profit Hospital Corporation, Department of Human Services, Child and Family Services Agency, DC Children and Youth Investment Trust, Office of Disability Rights and Department of Disability Services. She is also a member of the Committee on Education.

In 2009 & 2010, Councilmember Alexander chaired the Committee on Aging and Community Affairs. In 2011 & 2012, she chaired the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs. She has also served as a member on other committees: Education, Economic Development, Parks, Recreation and Libraries, and Public Safety and Judiciary.
At a very young age, Councilmember Alexander became interested in public service and community activism. Her dedication to her city and community developed into a natural calling that lead her on the path to serve Ward 7. She initially began her professional career in management with United Airlines. However, Councilmember Alexander has spent much of her career in the healthcare and community service industries. She worked with Chartered Health as a marketing professional advocating for access to improve health care services for Medicaid recipients. She also worked as a consultant with the American Preferred Provider Plan’s Early and Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT). Later, Councilmember Alexander became an insurance regulator with the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking. As a legislator, she has introduced several measures impacting Ward 7 and the District of Columbia with improvements in the areas of economic development, health, education, public safety, social services and environmental and regulatory issues.


Community service record
Councilmember Alexander is continuously involved in community affairs, especially those that affect youth and under-resourced populations. She has served on the Board of Directors for various nonprofits and has been recognized for her service and commitment by many local and national organizations.


Recognition
Councilmember Alexander has received several prestigious awards pertaining to healthcare, including the Ward 7 HIV/AIDS Collaborative Service Award, The Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s Public Policy Leadership Award, the DC Hospital Association’s President Award, the National Foundation of Women Legislators’ Woman of Excellence, The District of Columbia Primary Care Association’s Champion of Change and The Children’s National Health System Chairman’s Award.

She recently opened a healthcare consulting and government relations firm, Y. Alexander & Associates, where she holds the position of President & CEO.

Councilmember Alexander holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree from Howard University. She is a native of Washington, D.C.
