Branding for Startups

How branding works, why it matters to your startup, and when you need to start caring about it.

When it comes to branding, you don’t need to know all the things. But if you want your startup to become (or remain) successful, there is some stuff you need to know — like the basic branding fundamentals, the role branding plays in your industry, and what that means for your business (and your marketing budget, app design, and Instagram feed.)

It doesn’t have to be complicated; it can even be as simple as “the truth well told” — the straightforward motto of the McCann ad agency back in 1912 — but it does require some time and attention. Join us and get a handle on the basics and find out where you need to go from here.

How to Raise Seed Capital of $50K - $100K: Lessons from K-Street Capital angel group

One of the biggest challenges for early stage companies is raising the first true seed round of $50k - $100K beyond the initial investments from founders, family/friends and/or crowdfunding.

This period is the “death valley” of financing for companies- you are still in the development/validation phase and likely still pre-revenue or very small revenue. Where do you go for funding?
Most founders turn to individual angel investors because you are too early stage for angel investment groups.
But are you really “too early stage”?
K-Street Capital angel group has broken away from the typical angel group investment model and invests in early, often pre-revenue stage companies. The typical initial investment size is $25,000 - $100,000 with follow-on investments as warranted.  K-Street Capital’s goal is to provide a catalyst to promising, early stage companies.
In a roundtable/panel format, members of K Street Capital will lead an informative discussion about their decision-making process to invest in early stage startup companies. Key issues include what they look for in the team & business model, their due diligence process, typical terms, and how much they typically invest. They will also discuss why/how their model is different from the typical angel group.

The primary audience is founders of early stage startup companies who need to understand the mindset of an angel investor.  Those interested in understanding the role of angel investors in the startup ecosystem will also benefit from this session.

Location: American University Center for Innovation (AUCI), East Campus, Don Myers Technology Building, Room 221
Parking Lot: Paid Parking available.  Free AU Shuttle Buses from Tenleytown Metro Station (ask for the stop near East Campus). Map and directions to the building are attached.

To build on this philosophy and to deepen our commitment of using business as a force for good, we formed FMG SERV, a new company division that creates and directs our corporate social responsibility efforts through employee-led project teams. Super Meetup (Presented by Technical.ly & Sponsored by Truss)

The Super Meetup is a gathering of the most-connected members of the local tech, startup, and entrepreneurial scene. It’s a chance to make new friends and learn more about local tech and entrepreneurial resources and tech-focused meetup groups.

The idea of the Super Meetup is simple: meetups are integral to any tech scene. Every now and then, it makes sense to rally the leaders of tech-related meetups in town and gather for one big mixer. The idea is to connect people with groups they may not have otherwise known about.

What to expect:
• Learn about the participating Meetups and chat with the organizers one-on-one to find out more ways to get involved.
• Bring plenty of business cards and lots of energy! There will be a number of people you will want to network with.
• Find opportunities with the exhibiting sponsors (and grab some sweet swag)

Grow, Build, Sustain: “From Seeds to Sales, A Cannabis Tech Salon”

Join the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Metropolitan D.C. Chapter, and D.C. Startup Week during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 49th Annual Legislative Conference for Grow, Build, Sustain: “From Seeds to Sales, A Cannabis Tech Salon”. This year, the Cannabis Tech Salon is honoring Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), Co-Chair of the Bi-Partisan Congressional Cannabis Caucus, and Washington, D.C. Mayor, Muriel Bowser. We will be showcasing the growth and development of cannabis production in an effort to include and empower more Black business owners, a demographic that is tremendously underrepresented in today’s legal cannabis economy. The cannabis industry employs thousands of people in high-tech agricultural jobs, manufacturing, distribution, and retail. And, roughly two-thirds of Americans now live in states where some form of cannabis is legal, and polls consistently demonstrate that over 70% of Americans support permitting states to develop their own cannabis policies.

Date: Wednesday, September 11, 2019

Time: 12:00PM - 2:00PM

Location: Eaton Workshop, 1201 K Street NW, Washington, DC.

Participants: Members of Congress, banking institutions, cannabis industry innovators, thought-leaders, policymakers, retailers, and manufacturers will be in attendance educating attendees on the financing, growth, production, and distribution of cannabis products.

To Learn More: Please contact Mariko Bennett at 301-741-3443 or via email at mariko@cocobproductions.com.

In compliance with the United States’ House and Senate Ethics Guidelines, event reception fare and entertainment will be reasonable and of de minimis value consistent with the rules under the “Reception Exception” provision.

Happy Hour: Stories of How We Overcome Failure

Join us for a fun happy hour where we will hear stories on ways we've been knocked down, challenges we face  and how we have and will overcame failure.

Partnered with: Fuckup Nights DC is DMV's venue for professionals and entrepreneurs to share their stories of failure to change our collective perspective on fucking up. Once we learn to celebrate the process of failing, we can start to wear our fuckups like a badge of honor - and truly appreciate the bravery needed to get back up after you've been knocked down and the hard work that goes into success.  Fuckup Nights is an international movement and we are excited to bring together a diverse group of local speakers from all walks of life to share their "raw and unfiltered" stories of professional failures. With a casual “grab a drink after work” vibe, our speakers share their insights from doing something new, bold or different by saying "I tried this thing, I totally messed up, and here's what you can learn from it.

How to hire, build and create scale in your CX team

The secret is out! Companies now recognize the importance of delivering a top-notch experience for their customers and clients.

As your business grows, customer expectations start to evolve. You notice the volume and complexity of their requests growing, while expectations for information and responsiveness become more demanding. There is a growing need to shift from a reactive model of support to a proactive mode of identifying issues before they blow up. It can often feel like a daunting problem with no easy answers.

In this talk, Max Swagler will discuss his experience hiring, expanding, and scaling a customer-centric CS organization, providing you with best practices (and a few things to avoid) as you build your organization.

DevFestDC - Panel: How to look beyond your data-garden Through AI & Cross-Pollination of Data

Join us in our quest to achieve successful digital transformation, through looking beyond our own data garden wall and look at the successful outcomes that the marriage of internal and external data provides. Little ink has been spilled about the importance of looking outside one’s garden wall to better understand the world we all operate in. Companies running a tremendous amount of data often get trapped in a frog-in-a-well approach, failing to review external conditions and information and staying stuck in their inside universe. This leads to a limited view on their businesses and industries and eventually to a major setback against competitors who do understand the game of integrated data.

Yet today’s advancement in Big Data can bring headaches even to the best data team a company might have. We have data about everything, but we don’t always know what outside industry data is most relevant for our forecast models, as every industry has its specifics. What we do know is that the initial selection of data paired with inside business intelligence can make or break a successful model.

By 2020, the digital universe is expected to reach 44 zettabytes. That’s information on weather, traffic, location, likes and dislikes, emotions, travel, searches, political opinions, cultural customs, religious beliefs and many more. All things you can leverage to analyze and predict customer consumption patterns. Our panel strongly believes that by combining all these factors, together we can create an Outcomes Driven Economy, to completely change the way our world works and benefit society in a positive and permanent way.

GraphQL is supplanting REST as the way browsers and mobile apps interface with servers.  GraphQL is a rich language for apps and services to agree on the structure of all their data, how it can be queried, and how it can be modified.  It has been around since 2012, and powers products like Facebook, Twitter, and Drupal.  AWS AppSync is a serverless, managed GraphQL platform that integrates with other resources in the AWS Cloud.  This talk starts with a fun quiz show game written with AppSync that everyone can play.  We break it down showing snippets of the web and mobile code, the GraphQL, and how AppSync ties it to the cloud database (Dynamo DB).

The Human Element: How to focus on growth numbers without sacrificing the human experience?

We all know the story. It’s a tale as old as time.  VCs want to see outcomes, they want to results: show me revenue, show me growth, show me adoption.

In an attempt for your start up to grow in size and scale, it’s easy to get lost in the numbers. However, in a world where people resent businesses that treat them as a number and experiences are impersonal, transactional at best, it’s important to balance metrics with a compelling experience. People want to interact with businesses that have shared values, a purpose, and provide a personalized experience. In this session, learn things to consider when finding the right balance to grow your business without losing touch – and find out why getting that balance right is absolutely critical.

Takeaways
1. How analytics can be used to strengthen your brand experience and not harm it.
2. How transforming your thinking from customer experience (transactional) to human experience (value additive) can increase brand value.
3. Why brand purpose is important to a new generation of consumers.
4. How you might balance speed of growth without compromising customer value.

Finding Product & Market Fit: Identify Your Path To Profitability

Creating a product is just the first step in a long, complex equation. The world must be ready for your product, and people must understand how your product solves their problem. It’s called “Product/Market Fit, and it’s often referred to as the Holy Grail of entrepreneurship.

What You’ll Learn
This workshop is a hands-on course for founders, investors and others in the startup space to understand what Product/Market Fit is, how to know if you have it (or you don’t), how to build towards it, and how to tell the story about it when you’ve found it.

Why you want to learn it
While any company can convince a few people to buy something, to achieve long-term success you need a larger portion of the market to get excited about what you offer. Meeting a few metrics is not enough to demonstrate market traction. This workshop will help you understand the product/market fit cycle so you can answer the fundamental question every entrepreneur must answer: Are you building a product that people want AND that people want to pay for?
How it will help you

You will learn that it doesn’t have to be difficult to identify market fit and execute a product strategy to match; you just have to follow the proper procedure. You will get a step-by-step action plan to show you how to measure product/market fit, and develop a deeper understanding of why product-market fit is as important as the development of your product itself. You will dramatically increase your chances of success and leave with increased confidence that your “big idea” has the potential to become a viable business.
